Garza returns for the sixth inning, which is likely his last since there is stirring in the Rays bullpen out in left field.
Earlier this spring Rays manager Joe Maddon was asked what he’d like to see from Longoria that afternoon, and Maddon said a “wow” play.
Longoria’s home run in the fifth was a nice “wow.” So was the double play he started to end the sixth when he dropped to his knees to grab a smash from Pedro Feliz and fired the ball to Johnson at second, who made the pivot and finished the inning-ending double play.
The Rays still haven’t made a decision on Longoria.
Personally, I think they are leaning toward sending him to Triple A Durham. That means Johnson or Weber could be the lone rookie to make the Opening Day lineup.
Who would have predicted that a month ago?
