Of Seay, Garza and Pudge

For all those who are asking the question, What’s up with Bobby Seay? Here’s what:

The former Rays lefty won’t pitch today, having worked an inning Sunday. He is perfect in two appearances. No hits. No walks. Two strikeouts. Six batters faced, six batters retired.

I’ve known Seay for a long time, having watched him pitch for Sarasota High School.

He was labeled a bust with the Rays, though it is tough to live up to a $3 million signing bonus. Still, he was one of the nicest guys to pass through the Rays clubhouse over the years.

I stopped by his locker to say, “Hi,” but Seay was on a back field at Tiger Town running 10 40s.

We’re in the bottom of the second and the Tigers just added another run on a double into the right field corner by Granderson that scored Edgar Renteria from second.

Tigers 2, Rays 0.

That’s all for Garza. His day was cut short by the old pitch count.

Grant Balfour comes in from the bullpen.

By the way, Ivan Rodriguez is batting eighth for the Tigers, which tells you what kind of lineup the Tigers have. Sure, Pudge isn’t the Pudge of years past, but he’s better than a No. 8 hitter. Except in a lineup that features Granderson, Polanco, Sheff, Guillen, Cabrera, Renteria and Magglio Ordonez.

Yes, it is good to be Jim Leyland.
