Rays leave 'em loaded in first

Colon struggled at the start of his first inning when he allowed a leadoff single to Aki and walked Carlos Pena two batters later to load the bases with no outs. In between, he got Jason Bartlett to hit into what could have been a double play or at least a line-out to short, but Red Sox shortstop Alex Cora tried to play the ball on the short hop, hoping to trick Aki into thinking he would catch it on the fly and turn an easy double play, but the ball skipped by for an error.

No harm, though.

Colon settled down. He struck out B.J. Upton, got Jonny Gomes to foul out behind the plate and John Rodriguez to bounce out to first base.

Matt Garza walked Dustin Pedroia with one out in the bottom of the first, but got David Ortiz to bounced into a slow-developing 4-6-3 double play, but with Big Papi running, the Rays had all day to turn two.
