On this date in 1947, Al Lang Field was christened before the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees game. Both teams trained at the site along the St. Petersburg waterfront.
The Cards won 10-5 before a crowd of 7,706.
Stan Musial hit the first home run, which as estimated to have traveled 400 feet and landed on First Street.
Musial was one of seven future hall of famers to play that afternoon. The others were Red Schoedienst, Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra, Joe Medwick, Enos Slaughter and Yankee manager Bucky Harris.
To commemorate the occasion, Linda Ruth Tosetti, the granddaughter of Babe Ruth will receive the key to St. Pete and throw out the first pitch.
