Bartlett in middle of three-run third

Bartlett is having himself a nice afternoon so far. His single in the third inning scored Dioner Navarro with the game’s first run and put runners on first and second (Ben Zobrist had singled and was forced at second by Aki).

Rays 1, Phillies 0.

Pena should have fouled out to third but the wind and the clouds played tricks on Phillie third baseman Pedro Feliz, who circled under the ball in front of the visiting dugout but still couldn’t reach it.

Aki and Bartlett then pulled a double steal.

Expect more of that this season from the Rays. Maddon wants his team to be the best base-running team in baseball, and stealing bases is a good way to start.

Aki scores on Pena’s grounder to second.

Rays 2, Phillies 0

Guzman scores Bartlett with a single to center.

Rays 3, Phillies 0

Guzman steals second, but stays there when Cliff Floyd is caught looking.

Niemann is done for the day, having thrown three hitless innings. He struck out two and walked two.

It was a nice outing for the 6-foot-9 right-hander, who will likely begin the year at Triple A Durhamm, but could be the first pitcher called up should there be an opening in the rotation.
