Johnson's two-run single gives Rays 7-2 lead after 8

We’ve just been told the crowd is 6,755, which is the largest to see the Rays play at Al Lang.

We’re in the bottom of the eighth and my favorite ex-Rays pitcher Bobby Seay is struggling, allowing three consecutive hits to start the inning.

The Rays now lead 5-2, and here’s what happened while I was down in the clubhouse talking to Sheilds and DiFelice:

Upton doubled to start the sixth, stole third and scored on a sac fly by Evan Longoria.

Gomes, who was on first having been hit by a pitch, stole second, something he was bragging on when he reached the clubhouse. Gomes came home on an RBI single by Guzman.

Rays 5, Tigers 1

Marcus Thames hit his third home run of the spring in the eighth, a solo shot off Andy Sonnanstine.

Rays 5, Tigers 2

And as I type that, Elliot Johnson lines a bases-loaded single to right field off Seay and two runs score.

Rays 7, Tigers 2

Seay strikes out Chris Richard to end the inning.

I’m going to head down to the field now so I can grab Maddon after the final out.

I’ll be back soon to let you know what happened.
