Troy Percival is on to start the sixth. This is the fourth appearance of the spring for the Rays closer, who has retired all nine batters he’s faced, including for by strikeouts.
But the perfect run ends for Percy. Gary Sheffield can do that to a lot of pitchers.
The Tampa native lines the ball off the left field fence and reaches second easily, thanks to Guzman’s 23-hop throw from left field. OK, the ball didn’t bounce 23 times, but Guzman isn’t going to make anyone forget Delmon Young’s arm.
With two out Renteria singles Sheff home.
Rays 3, Tigers 1
Inge doubles to left field, but Renteria is out trying to score, but not before crashing into DiFelice. No major incident here. DiFelice picked up his mask and headed to the dugout. What would Joe girardi think?
Here's what DiFelice thinks:
“That’s baseball,” he said a few minutes later in the locker room.
