We’re in the bottom of the sixth and there hasn’t been any more scoring.
In fact, the Indians haven’t had a hit since the fourth, and the reason is because they are dead tired. All that running around the bases wore them out. They’re slumped on the dugout bench, napping like your grandfather after Thanksgiving dinner. The only difference is they’re not watching the Cowboys on TV.
What they’re watching right now is Evan Longoria scoring from first base on Eric Hinske’s double to left center with two out in the sixth.
Indians 11, Rays 6
Longoria had single with two out off Cleveland pitcher Tom Mastny.
Hector Gimenez can’t get out of the way of a pitch and takes his base.
This brings up Jon Weber, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite Rays. He’s spent nine years in the minors, banging on the door. He’s done a pair of tours in the independent leagues and he won’t go away.
A non-roster invitee to spring training, the 5-foot-10, left-handed hitting outfielder has caught the eye of Rays manager Joe Maddon.
Here Weber catches a fastball with the fat part of the bat and rips an RBI single into right field.
Indians 11, Rays 7
Fernando Perez draws a walk, and the bases are loaded.
OK, what happens next is pure Little League.
John Jaso lines a two-run single to right field.
Indians 11, Rays 9.
Perez continues to third when the relay is mishandled and the ball rolls toward shortstop. With second base uncovered, Jaso heads to second.
No further scoring, though.
