I was wrong. J.P. Howell returned for his third inning when he headed to the mound to start the eighth.

What was I thinking? He’s a starter, and all starters are going three innings.

The left-hander, one of five vying for the final two spots in the rotation, was working with the Rays biggest lead in the game.

Chris Richards singled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
