Brett Gardner, who wears 91 and is playing center field for the Yankees, beats out a grounder behind second. Bartlett made a nice play to get to the ball, but his throw was late.
Bartlett is supposed to have good range – the fourth best in the AL according to a formula introduced by ESPN, which computes putouts plus assists divided by innings.
The Rays didn’t see anything like that last season from their shortstops.
Rays starter Jeff Niemann fanned Jeter with a fastball under the hands. It was a tough at-bat for Jeter, who stayed alive by fouling three pitches into the stands over the first base dugout.
They were bullets, too. Surprised no one was injured.
Gardner stole second during Jeter’s at-bat, but was doubled off the base when first baseman Chris Richard grabbed a line drive by Bobby Abreu. Gardner was running on the play.
