The Blue Jays radio team is calling the game from the room next to me in the Al Lang Field press box. They sound in midseason form.
The Rays radio team of Andy Freed and Dave Wills are in the box to my right, but I can’t hear them.
Freed and Wills are two of the nicest guys you’ll meet in this business.
If you know them, you know what I’m talking about.
Anyway, the Jays opened a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Aaron Hill greeted Trever Miller with a double off the center field wall and scored on a single by Rod Barajas that snuck under the glove of Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett.
In Bartlett’s defense, he was playing in with a runner on third, and the ball was hit hard.
A cause for concern? Bartlett led American League shortstops with 26 errors last season.
But it is only the second game of the spring, so I’ll give Bartlett a break here.
And as I type this, Bartlett starts a 6-4-3 double play, so boo me.
I know this won’t take much, but Bartlett should be the best defensive shortstop the Rays have ever had.
Hey, Mike DiFelice is in the game as the Rays catcher.
It’s his first appearance as a Ray since he was traded from Tampa Bay to Arizona on July 25, 2001.
